Dr. Awasthi is the Chairperson of the Language Commission in accordance with the Constitution of Nepal. Dr. Awasthi was awarded with Suprabal Janasewashree by the President of Nepal (in 2015) for outstanding contribution in public service, Nepal Vidya Bhusan “Ka” (Nepal Education Medal “A”) by His Majesty the King (in 2006) for his PhD research, the Order of Gorkha Dakshin Bahu by His Majesty the King (in 1994), Education Day Medal and Letter of Appreciation (in 2004) by the Ministry of Education, and was facilitated with a letter of appreciation by the Government of Nepal for outstanding contribution to good governance and fiscal reforms, and was decorated with Coronation Silver Jubilee Medal (in 1996) by His Majesty the King.
