The Generation Green(TGG) campaign of WWF Nepal have embarked on yet another drive to action a personal social responsibility reaching out to young people to take a simple single step towards saving the planet.
Marking the second anniversary of TGG on 14 February, Seed Your Future (SYF) campaign was launched. Coinciding with the theme of Valentine’s Day SYF campaign encouraged youth to spread life and nurture love for the planet by planting a seed.
SEED YOUR FUTURE campaign is a hope to bring young people together to a single doable action that gains its significance as they grow. Coming along six months of the campaign, ten school sites are carrying out a pilot project in a greenhouse set up. The students who are involved are having a hands on experience on growing green from proficient agriculture experts and meanwhile also providing the exposure of the dynamics of market integration. The campaign has already produced the first monsoon harvest of the season in July and was made available in the Le Sherpa Farmer’s market, Kathmandu. “SYF has been a journey of an interesting learning in growing greens for students especially while getting their hands dirty in the greenhouse area “ encapsulates Sudhin Pun, School Manager at the Celebration Co-Ed School, Jorpati, Kathmandu.
Despite Nepal’s dependency on agriculture as the main source of food, agriculture is still not a preferred career choice for the younger generation. In the urban context youth have lost their connection to the soil around them and hence this campaign reinforces horticulture not only as a way of sustaining life but also as a viable career option for younger generation.
