One of the TGG Partners YAE (Youth Alliance for Environment) organized a talk program with a topic “Air pollution in Kathmandu and the role of youth”. Chief Guest DIG, Metropolitan Traffic Police, Mr. Keshav Prasad Adhikari shared some interesting facts about the current pollution status in Kathmandu. According to him, in comparison to the scenario two decades ago, number of city vehicles have increased by more than 800% and this has largely contributed to the existing pollution scenario in Kathmandu. Further to that, he added, “Referring to the WHO survey, the pollution level in Kathmandu is 7 times more than the international standard of pollution level and this means that a normal healthy person should be recommended to stand in the roads of Kathmandu for not more than 4 hours a day but our traffic police is on a public service duty of 12-14hrs a day.” He on behalf of the entire Metropolitan Police Traffic appealed to the youth that the traffic alone cannot solve the problem of pollution and youth as well public awareness campaign should focus on issues of pollution which can further put an impact on policy makers.
40 TGG members studying at the Bachelors level in 17 different colleges based in Kathamandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur participated in the program and got an exclusive opportunity to put forward their questions and issues related to traffic situation in Kathmandu and DIG Adhikari reciprocated actively.
